Marty Wolfe

Marty Wolfe is this month’s Featured Artist! Many of you may know her as the building manager and studio artist at WHAM and if you don’t then swing on by and check out her unique artwork or read a little bit about her!

“I see it in my head, and I have to create it. My art comes from my heart and I try to create art that people will love.” -Marty Wolfe

Marty was born and raised on a farm in New Jersey and as a young girl, she began drawing on a roll of brown paper that her mother had spread out down the hallway. Marty kept on drawing the things she was inspired by and as time went on her art just kept getting better and better. After setting out into the world as an adult, Marty became a house painter. A man approached her asking to see her landscape paintings and walked away with five of them that he had purchased. It was then that Marty realized that creating her own images and selling them was becoming a way of life for her. Marty loves to experiment and her many eclectic creations include mosaics, paintings, sculpture, portraits of people and animals, wooden tables from indigenous wood and wall hangings made of copper and stained glass. Marty is also a wall mural artist and has designed and painted many murals to include a group project painting all four corners and an intersection in downtown Peoria, AZ. She has completed many commissions for private individuals who wanted to brighten up the dull concrete walls in their backyard. Marty has mentored other artists and is an excellent teacher. She has taught groups of adaptive and dementia folks where her projects have given these people a “voice” to express how they feel. For several years Marty has been in charge of teaching art classes for veterans. Working with these men and women has inspired her to create many military focused pieces of art. Marty also teaches Paint and Sip parties for 30-35 adults. Marty creates from a place of “unknown knowing”. She sees it, feels it, thinks about it and then just creates it.

WHAM is partnering with Women4Women

WHAM (What’s Happen’n Art Movement) is a non-profit art organization committed to giving back to the community. Women4Women of Surprise, is managed by Jo Grant, provides feminine hygiene products for homeless and low-income women.

Their mission is to help women maintain their dignity and health by distributing bags of feminine hygiene products. Since the pandemic has hit, the West Valley-area giving to the Homeless has been a challenge. Many have lost jobs and are not able to give as they did in the past. Women 4 Women is determined to provide as much hygiene products as they can, but they are in a very difficult situation right now because of the pandemic.

On September 13th WHAM held a group bagging day to put together 136 bags for Women 4 Women. City Council member Alyson Cline of Surprise and Councilwoman Vicki Hunt of Peoria were among 12 city residents and WHAM members who participated. These bags will be distributed to many shelters, schools, and other non-profits upon request. Two such charities we are currently distributing to is Homeless Youth Connection and Streetlight USA. Each bag contains pads or tampons, pantie liners, hand wipes and feminine wipes. WHAM will host a bagging day every quarter with the next community participation day will be December 13th at 3:00 p.m. The date will be announced on FB and Instagram as well as on WHAM’s Website

If you’d like to provide supplies or participate contact Jo Grant at 520-401-2878. Women 4 Women is a non-profit 501(c)3 that gives the Arizona Tax credit for donations. WHAM is dedicated to the advancement of the arts for educational and cultural enrichment with an emphasis on encouraging the creative process in our West Valley’s diverse population.
